Living in Tamarindo

Tamarindo Sport Fishing – A Trip with the Poker Buddies!

When I first moved here over two years ago one of the very first people I met here was Barry Lawson, owner of an Costa Rica B & B Villa Alegre. Barry literally was the very first person I met. The day after I arrived I decided to go running on the beach in Tamarindo. I ended up running towards to Langosta from my apartment. Once I got to Langosta, about 1 – 1.5 miles from Tamarindo, I was dying to get off the beach. So I found an exit off the beach. It just so happened that this exit was the beach access for Villa Alegre.

So I stumbled up this exit and was dumped into the back of Villa Alegra. This was how I had my chance meeting with one of my better friends from Costa Rica, Barry Lawson. As I walked up to the back of their place I was greeted by Barry. I gotta say I felt a little stupid. Villa Alegra looks more like someone’s house than a place open to the public. Some may be even say a B & B 😉 .

Any how Barry made me feel comfortable instantly. He simple asked me if he could help me, not concerned with my intrusion on his property. I asked him if he knew of a hospital in town.

He replied “Are you hurt??”.

I answered “No, I’m looking for Bill Wilson.”

Immediately, he invited me in and gave me a cold glass of water to drink and got to work on finding out where I could find the fellowship. After providing the info I needed we spoke for a little while about our backgrounds. During the convo he invited me to join him at his Wednesday poker game with the boys. Every Wednesday Barry has group of locals over for a small stakes poker game.

The regulars consist of Mike Clifford – Langosta Sports Bar, Richard … (Rich I don’t even know your last name), Bill the painter (Again no last name), and Steve Curtis. Steve is the owner and operator of a Tamarindo Sporting Fishing boat called Capullo.com. We’ve all gotten to know each other very well over the last 2 years of playing poker every Wednesday.

To commemorate our years of playing together Steve provided us with a treat and took us out on his Costa Rica charter boat . Steve runs two boats for his Tamarindo Sport Fishing operation. He’s got a 22ft Boston Whaler and a 36ft Custom Topaz Sportfisher.

We had an excellent time. Beyond the fact that I got seasick and booted over the side of the boat.

Steve has been here probably the longest of anyone I’ve met here. He’s been here for over 25 years fishing these waters. Unfortunately, the fish weren’t biting as we had hoped. Currents were working against us that day. At any rate we had a good time seeing lots of wild life. We had a whale spotting which is pretty rare and a number of dolphins. I’ll leave you with a few shots from the trip.
