Expect Nothing…

Posted by Kristina

…and it’ll be a good day. Patrick always likes to say about Costa Rica, “Wake up in the morning expecting nothing and your day will go smoothly.”

Starting our travels on Thursday, June 3rd, I’ve begun thinking about what I want out of our trip to South Africa or what I’m expecting when we get there. However, when I travel, I tend to go into it without any expectations. This way I can fully appreciate where I am and what it has to offer without being overwhelmed or disappointed.

A few things I know for sure…

Its going to be crazy! Millions of people passing through the country, all for the love of futbol, soccer, football.
…and how I feel about it: I’m a little nervous about the traveling and being in and near the city of Durban. We’ve heard many things about Durban, mostly not-so-nice. Apparently, Patrick spoke with someone the other day from this area, he told Patrick that, “if you are stopped at a red light and you feel uneasy, then just drive through it.”

We’re staying about 200 meters from the beach in a town of Ballito, 30 minutes North of Durban in a villa called, Villa Sea’esta-get it?! www.ballito.net
…and how I feel about it: I’m expecting Ballito and this part of the country to be a little like Northern California, at least I hope it is. I’ve read temperatures can range from 78 degrees F during the day and down to the 40s at night. I can’t wait to run and get a feel for the town and what it has to offer, after all it will be home for the next three weeks.

We’re surfing!!!!!
…and how I feel about it: Its fair to say that I’m a touch terrified. The fact is that there are great whites. I do understand that I’m more likely to be struck by lightening or to be in a car accident. To be perfectly honest, I think I watched way to many great white shark attacks on YouTube before we left, I can’t shake the image of a 15 foot great white. AH! Patrick tells me there are, “nets”. Does a “net” sound like something that will stop a 15 foot shark? NO! Maybe a cannon or electric fence. Maybe I’ll just surf where everyone else is, this will lessen the odds, 3% chance is better than 50/50, if its just Patrick and myself. So, I guess as far as expectations are concerned, I don’t have so many. Like I said, better to go into something with an open mind. I’m really excited about trying new food, going on safari, supporting the US soccer team, checking out a few other games, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing a new culture, new thoughts on the world and everything that is South Africa!
